A little of my lately*

*to borrow a lovely phrase from Herriott Grace.

Well dear friends, in spite of promises to myself and others that I would take plenty of pictures on this trip, my camera has yet to be dragged out of my backpack.  Sometimes a camera feels like an extension of my eyes, honing in my gaze, but at other times I feel like it gets in the way of experiencing.  This time has felt like the latter.  But thank goodness for camera phones and spontaneous little snapshots!  I have a handful of those, so I thought I’d share a bit of what we’ve been doing, seeing, and of course, eating…

We flew into Spokane, Washington where we were welcomed by snow and Joel’s parents.  We hung out there for a bit, paying visits to family, friends, and also Dry Fly Distillery, a pioneer of microdistilling in Washington state.

From there we made the long drive to Portland, Oregon where mind-blowing comfort food and craft distilling are as easy to come by as a teacup at a ladies’ luncheon.  Finally, finally, I got to eat lefse wraps (mine was filled with homemade sausage, cabbage, and plum chutney, wow) at Viking Soul Food. Our friend Griff has been sending me pictures of this food cart for the past two years to make me jealous.

We visited a couple more distilleries, filled our bellies with extremely creamy ice cream at Salt and Straw, and I became obsessed with the cauliflower with olives and harissa cream from Tasty n Sons. The stuff is insane.  I plan to make a counterfeit version soon, and when I do, I’ll let you know how you can too.

And did I mention the biscuits?!  Biscuits with collards, an egg, and hot sauce at Pine State Biscuits.  Oh, how I love spicy breakfasts!

That was really just the start, but I was too busy eating to capture the rest (things like Korean BBQ pork, my first ever waffle with chicken on it, coffee with real hazelnut butter, and lovely, lovely charcuterie).  After two surprisingly sunny days in Portland – perfect for some gorgeous hiking in forest park – we headed up to Seattle, and into the rain.  I would expect nothing less from Seattle, really.

The biggest highlight of Seattle, well besides seeing our wonderful friends and family there, and pizza at Delancey (which I’ve been dreaming of for years!), and a ganache stuffed fig from Fran’s Chocolates (which disappeared far too fast to photograph), was our visit to Bainbridge Organic Distillers, out on gorgeous Bainbridge Island.

They were some of the nicest, most helpful guys I’ve ever met!  We’re thinking about buying their still, you see…

It’s been fantastic!  I couldn’t wish for a better trip, but I’m awfully glad to be heading home today.  I can’t wait to pull our heads back together and re-find some semblance of a routine.  I really can’t wait to see our darling puppy.  And, I must confess, I’m looking forward to eating food that doesn’t fall into the crispy fried, or gooey cheesey, or waffle stacked variety.

Plus, I have something delicious planned for you for as soon as I’m back in my kitchen.
